This Republic Day weekend promised a mammoth clash between two big-ticket Bollywood films - 'Padmaavat' and 'PadMan'. However, in a sudden turn of events, the R Balki directorial, starring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Aptehas bowed out of the box-office battle and will release on February 9, 2018.
Rumours of 'PadMan' makers postponing their release were doing the rounds online, however, it was only confirmed on Friday evening with the makers releasing an official statement announcing their new release date. With 'PadMan' being the second Hindi film, after 'Aiyaary', to bow out of a battle with the Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus, it only means that the fictional periodic drama will enjoy a solo release over the long holiday weekend.
In a previous interaction, when asked about the box-office clash, Akshay was quoted saying, "It is not about competition, it is a very big day, a big week, so all the films can come, both the films can release on that day. Every film has the right to release whenever they want, and I am happy for them.
"According to reports, director Bhansali, who faced more than his share of trials over the past months leading up to the film's release, met and requested Akshay to push back the release of his film.
Akshay Kumar's 'PadMan' will now share the box-office with Sidharth Malhotra's 'Aiyaary' when it hits theatres on February 9. 'Padmaavat' on the other hand is scheduled to release on 25 January, with paid previews organised for 24 January.
