TRICHY: With "Ranga... Ranga" chants from devotees reverberating the corridors, Namperumal, the procession idol of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, traversed through the Paramapatha Vaasal around 5 am on Friday.
Close to one lakh people thronged the 156-acre temple complex to witness Namperumal leaving his sanctum sanctorum. Namperumal, clad in gem-studded armour, passed through Naazhiketan gateway and Vraja Nadhi Mandapam before exiting the Paramapatha Vaasal.
Srirangam is known for the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the foremost of all Divya Desam temples, according to Vaishnavite belief. It is known as the 'Boologa Vaikundam' (heaven on earth).
Every year, during the Tamil month Margazhi (December-January), Vaikunda Ekadasi is celebrated in the pattern of Pagal Pathu (daytime celebrations for 10 days) and Raa Pathu (nighttime celebrations for 10 days).
On the tenth day of the Pagal Paththu, Namperumal gives darshan to his devotees in Mohini Alangaaram. The very next day, the first day of Raa Paththu, Namperumal is taken in procession from sanctum sanctorum. Namperumal exits the Paramapatha Vaasal, known as Sorga Vaasal (gateway to heaven), and gives darshan to his devotees at Thousandpillar Mandapam.
The most crucial event of the 21 days festival was celebrated in grandeur on Friday morning.
The Trichy city police opened a couple of helpline numbers (94424-51914 and 94424-73540) for devotees to report and get assistance.
Police sources said that CCTV cameras had been installed in 53 spots across the temple, and loud speakers had been placed in 73 spots for regulating devotees.
